east man is a new project from anthoney hart and its material predates his previous work as basic rhythm. his unique take on grime reduces the sound to its steely fundamentals, bringing in influences from dancehall, drum and bass and techno to gird the voices of the mcs he works with. his own name for this hardcore continuum mongrel is hi tek.
anthoney struck a friendship with the academic and theorist paul gilroy, who wrote the album introduction below, after starting personal research on representations of working class and mixed race families. he asked paul for some help after coming across his work via stuart hall, paul’s mentor. their discussions and friendship developed, and it dawned on anthoney that his research and the east man album had some synergy, so he asked paul to write a piece conveying that.

for its the second various artists sampler, the parisian label gives us another sharp selection of talented young bloods and confirmed producers. 4 quality deep house tracks here, done by sebo k, swoy, dj honesty and olivier romero. as usual with politics of dancing records, this sampler is a versatile collection of dancefloor friendly cuts, and carefully chosen cracking deep house tracks. limited vinyl only release.

the bug kündigt mit bad feat. flowdan und get out the wa feat. killa p & irah (die erste kollaboration zwischen killa p und the bug seit skeng! vom 2008er album london zoo) seine neue aa-side 12inch an, die anfang dezember 2017 auf 12inch vinyl via ninja tune erscheint. auf bad schauen flowdan und the bug ein wenig über ihren eigenen musikalischen tellerrand: der mc bietet seine poesie in bestem singjay-style (abgeleitet von sing und jay aus deejay: dem eigentlich mc in der reggae-welt) dar und verweist somit offenkundig auf seine jamaikanische herkunft, indem er chams klassiker ghetto story zitiert und mit seiner eigenen geschichte über das aufwachsen in east london vermischt. ebenfalls für ihn eher unüblich, hat the bug den ganzen riddim aus einer durch ihn stark verfremdeten aufnahme eines einzelnen sowjetischen drumcomputers produziert und so lange an den effekten rumgeschraubt, bis der beat ordentlich rumpelte. und das wars dann auch: keine weiteren komponenten wurden hierfür verwendet. ganz ohne basslines kommt dieser track gänzlich mit vocals und beatbox allein aus so simpel und effektiv kann es manchmal gehen. get out the way ist die erste zusammenarbeit zwischen the bug und killa p, seit ihrem furiosen gemeinsamen song skeng! aus dem schon kultverdächtigen album london zoo von 2008. killa p bringt hierfür noch irah aus seiner killaz army crew mit und zusammen fallen sie über den beat her, den the bug in anlehnung an seine heißgeliebte und von junglist oder dillinja inspirierte reese bassline produziert hat. die beiden mcs üben sich im song in sachen dancefloor-zerstörung und klingen erschreckend glaubwürdig in ihren drohungen und einschüchterungsversuchen.

as half of heltah skeltah, 1/8 of the boot camp clik, and with a successful solo career in his own right, sean price (brooklyn, ny) had a cult-like following, releasing critically acclaimed projects such as ‘monkey barz,’ ‘jesus price supastar,’ and ‘mic tyson.’ sadly, sean price passed away in his brooklyn apartment in august of 2015. the entire music community has since been grieving his untimely death, though the release of this 30-track mixtape, now available on vinyl offers an opportunity for fans and friends alike to celebrate the life and career of the storied mc.

since we opened our small record store in brighton we have been asked repeatedly for new garage releases on wax. this reminded us that not too much that is available at the moment which could easily fit that criteria. and as long term garage fans ourselves we are more than happy to oblige the faithful with 4 killa darkside steppers from londons buzzin 10. the beats harken back to classic uk garage but are topped off by synths that share common musical ground with detroit electro or european electronica.

mikal & break - status low : the ep opens with the step out monster *status low* a south country collab between co- conspirators mikal and break, it is a dj tool that stops for no one. the breakdown rolls through with drums and fx and then delves into even lower bass territory. it is a classic mikal & break affair - steam train, screw face and stepping.

roger gerressen switches to the main fof label for his next release, liberal taking up the entirety of the a side with a killa groove resplendent with knife edged percussion and tripped out synth stabs. flipsides mint goes subaquatic with a serious slice of heads down bizinizz - a male spoken vocal refrain repeats throughout to give a hypnotic edge. lastly, roger teams up with his buddy smokin g on drunk game, super rounded, housed up beats and an undulating synth / string line permeate the groove lending the ep a sense of levity.

in 2006, hip-hop was turned on its head by the arrival of chicagos kenny dennis, a proudly married, mustachioed and middle-aged rapper repping no-nonsense lyrics and a salt-of-the-earth swagger. this unlikely hero delivered a handful of classics via the album, dennehy, and then disappeared. but in 2011, kennys cult of fans were given a gift: the long-lost 1993 lp theres a situation on the homefront from his theretofore unheard boom-bap crew tha grimm teachaz. (kenny was then known as kdz, tha killa deacon. the group was briefly signed to jive records.) as it turned out, that gift was twofold. inspired by the anticon-backed release of that unearthed gem, kenny has teamed up with producers jel and odd nosdam to make a brand new record, a reintroduction of sorts, dubbed the kenny dennis ep.
